Nelson Mandela, Au Revoir.

*****

The world wept at the death of Nelson Mandela on Thursday evening. Only few people mark their passage on Earth with such a sincerity. Because Nelson Mandela always had sincerity in what we call the fight of his life. Young lawyer, President of the African National Congress, political prisoner, President of South Africa, man. His whole life was dedicated to the oppressed people, people deprived of liberty. And his fight known and recognized today, signs the loss of a great man.

Already in his youth, Rolihlahla Mandela, called as usual by his school teacher, Nelson, shows a clear desire for freedom. So when his father announces him an arranged marriage, he fled to Johannesburg. Refusing any obligation and tradition. He works and continues his law studies by correspondence. People he met lead him to the African National Congress which fights against white minority rule.
The 1948 elections marked the coming to power of the National Party and a much harder segregation. Apartheid was born. Nelson Mandela, a lawyer since 1951, became in 1952 Vice-President of the African National Congress, with the aim to fight against unjust laws without using violence.

But in 1960, the police firing into a crowd of demonstrators fleeing, changes the vision of Nelson Mandela. Government goes too far. Armed actions are inevitable, he creates a military wing called Umkhonto we Sizwe (MK). Acts of sabotage are organized with the imperative to avoid human victims. Targeted areas are very symbolic as offices of internal passports. August 5, 1962, Nelson Mandela is arrested and jailed. Found guilty of sedition, he is sentenced to life imprisonment. 27 years of detention will not put an end to his ideas and commitments. While conditions are very difficult, he unites with other prisoners, talk politics and culture. We even mention in the prison, a "Mandela University".
International opinion is very interested in South Africa and condemns apartheid. Proposals are made to the prisoner several times for his release. Of course, these are proposals from the government to deprive him of freedom outside. He refuses every time. In February 1990, the new head of government, Frederik de Klerk released Nelson Mandela.

But the fight does not stop there. The new free man wishes to enter into negotiations to finally see a cohabitation between black people and white people happen, cohabitation which he dreamed of. Afrikaners fear civil war and the killing of white population. But negotiations, not without difficulty, manage to build solid foundation for the new South Africa. In 1993, Frederik de Klerk and Nelson Mandela are rewarded for their success in that risky business, and receive the Nobel Peace Prize.
On 27 April 1994, while he is President of the African National Congress, Nelson Mandela is elected President of the Republic of South Africa, for the first multiracial general elections. After serving one term, he retired at the age of 81 years.

Thursday, December 5, Nelson Mandela has died at the age of 95 years and leaves behind him recognition and admiration. He knew, with strength and courage, to keep his ideas and to fight for his freedom and the one of the others. With the aim to spare lives, to reduce violence, and with the ultimate dream of "a free and democratic society in which all persons live together in harmony and with the same opportunities."
